SigEp Ruck Leadership Institute 2019

This summer, Brother Matthew Geary attended the SigEp Ruck Leadership Institute in Richmond, VA. The following is the summary that he has been kind enough to provide of his experience!

During my time at the Ruck from June 12-16 at Richmond College I was placed in a small group mixed with brothers from other chapters from across the nation. I met a wide range of SigEp brothers from California alpha chapter to Maine alpha chapter. Meeting brothers from across the country was a great way to make contacts with other chapters and get an insight into how they run their chapters, run rush weeks, and host events. Talking to brothers from across the country was an experience I never had at Carlson and made me appreciate SigEp and the values it has instilled. At Ruck I was apart of Team Hartman with our team leader being John Hartman, past grand chapter president and recipient of the Order of the Golden Heart Award, the highest award given in SigEp. John and I had many insightful conversations about what it means to run a chapter, how to allocate resources, but above all how to be passionate to everyone. John made an emphasis on being caring, passionate, and understanding as these qualities are not important as a member of SigEp but as a member in the community and in life. John also made an emphasis on making the most out of out time in college and surrounding yourself with the right group of people. The other facilitators for Team Hartman, Travis Taylor and Chris Minnis also had great insight on how SigEp has changed from the time their were in college, and on how we can make changes in the future. Besides the facilitators, mentors, and brothers I got to be with. Being in Richmond where SigEp was founded was a learning experience in of itself. Learning more about the founding of SigEp and the reasons for the formation of the fraternity gave me more insight into who we are and why we do what we do. Visiting the SigEp headquarters at Zollinger House was another great learning experience to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes and the history of Conclave, Carlson, and other events that occur. Overall the Ruck Leadership Institute taught me more about myself, the fraternity and where we should go in the future. This leadership opportunity, unlike Carlson or Conclave, allows us to work with others more one on one and focus on our own personal skills rather than broader skills as I saw at Carlson. Sending a brother or even more than on each year to Ruck would benefit not only the chapter, but the brother who go as it has benefited me.

VDBL,

Matthew Geary

2017 AVC Elections

Every year in August, per our bylaws, we have an election for positions in the AVC.  This year is no different and the positions that are up for election are VP Finance (Treasurer) and VP Relations.  Currently, those positions are held by Matt Fox (Treasurer) and David Ress (VP Relations) and both Matt and David have decided not to run for re-election.  I wish to thank both of them for their effort in their respective positions and hope that they will continue to be an active member of the AVC.

Below will be a tentative timeline for the election as well as description for the positions.  If you feel you would like to run for either one of those positions, self-nomination is accepted and if you wish to nominate someone for either or both of the positions, seek their permission prior to nomination. Positions are a two year term with monthly teleconferences and meetings throughout each year.  Nominations can be sent to anyone on the AVC Executive Board or to our AVC email address:  sigep.nyx.avc@gmail.com

Timeline for election:

  • July 17th – July 31st:  Open Nomination for the two positions
  • August 1st – August 15th :  Affirmation and campaign (if necessary)
  • August 16th – August 30th:  Voting and confirmation of position

Position Information:

VP Finance (Treasurer):

The Alumni and Volunteer Corporation (AVC) treasurer is responsible for all financial transactions and records of the corporation, including the annual budget.  The Treasurer also advises the undergraduate VP of Finance on the Chapter’s financial operations.  Additionally, the Treasurer will ensure the AVC and the chapter financial stability while planning for future needs.  Obligations for the Treasurer will be to oversee all accounts, balances, and financial plans of the AVC and the Undergraduate Chapter, conduct a yearly audit of the AVC and Chapter finances, and ensure appropriate documents are filed with IRS and SigEp Headquarters.  Finally, the Treasurer will present all financial charges to the AVC President and the AVC Executive Board.

VP Relations:

The Alumni and Volunteer Corporation (AVC) Vice President of Relations is responsible for all alumni, volunteer, and donor cultivation efforts.  This includes providing alumni with a continue connection to Sigma Phi Epsilon by developing and promoting volunteer and networking opportunities.  The VP of Relations will schedule and coordinate annual alumni events and facilitate the regional alumni events for New York Chi.  They will work closely with the AVC Secretary to manage consistent alumni-focused communications and recruit volunteers to the AVC.  The will also work with the Treasurer for helping to manage and promote a consistent annual campaign to support chapter scholarships and AVC funds.

Bikeathon Fundraising Event for St. Lawrence Literacy Center

Josh Wilkes, Undergraduate Secretary

The Undergraduate Brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon will be holding an event called “Bike-A-Thon” consisting of brothers taking shifts riding a stationary bike in Cheel Arena for 24 hours. This year the chapter will be fundraising to re-open the St. Lawrence County Literacy Center. Our goal is to positively impact as many lives in the community as possible. For further details please see the below advertisement we have put together.Your generous support in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

Sigma Phi Epsilon of Clarkson University is hosting a Bike-a-thon at Cheel Arena on Friday 10/28, during the parents’ weekend hockey game. Our purpose for this event is to raise awareness and money for Potsdam’s Literacy Center of Northern New York. This organization is made up of volunteers who dedicate their time to help the people of St. Lawrence County who struggle to read and write on an adult level. Unfortunately, this past August the Literacy Center shut down due to a lack of funding. Our goal is to help raise enough money for the volunteers to resume operation and to eventually volunteer there ourselves. We also plan to dedicate manpower and volunteer hours once we get the Center up and running. One in five adults in St. Lawrence County struggles with illiteracy, which makes it difficult for most people to work non-minimum wage jobs.

We ask that you stop by our booth and show your support, we will be there for 24 hours starting at 5:00pm Friday 10/28. For just $5 you can enter our raffle to win a FitBit or a Scratch off basket. Want to help but you can’t make it to the event? Go online and make a donation at our GoFundMe. Every little bit can help (Please donate using description “Sigma Phi Epsilon”). Going through life without being able to read or write is not easy. A small donation goes a long way. With your help, we can reopen the Literacy Center and get these people the help they need.

2016 Fall SigEp NYX Financial Update

Dear Brothers,

For additional transparency we will be including NYX AVC financial updates in newsletters going forward. Please take time to review the current financial assessment we have put together.

What you don't see in the financials are the Scholarships (held by the SigEp Educational Foundation). In the past year we successfully endowed the Kate Mikel Leadership Scholarship (min. $5,000 to be endowed) as well as added additional funds to each of the other NYX specific scholarships created by Brothers, the Jason Dunn Memorial Scholarship and The Edward M. Valenta Entrepreneurial Scholarship. The balances of all scholarships as of 12/31/15: Jason Dunn = $5,446, Valenta = $7,622, Mikel = $5,000 (6/31/16), NYX Chapter = $260. I will provide additional details on the our website, sigepnyx.org, for the balances when I receive information from HQ.

Feel free to reach out to me with any questions at sigepnyxfoundation@gmail.com or Facebook/LinkedIn.

Brother MeetUp Events - Rafting in the Adirondacks

Ryan Stratton, AVC VP Member Development

Brothers,

On June 18th, thirteen of our brothers went white water rafting through the Hudson River Gorge, in the Adirondacks. Our group consisted of alumni from the classes of 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and two under graduates. We rented a cabin in nearby North Creek, where we all stayed for Friday and Saturday nights.

The trip was a great success and will hopefully be the first of many events put on by the AVC around the country. Our goal is to provide fun weekend or day long events for alumni to meetup. Every year our numbers continue to grow and as an AVC we are trying to add more events, programing, and services for our expanding member base. If you have any interest in trying to organize an event, be it in Baltimore, Boston, Texas, or wherever; please reach out to myself or another member of our AVC. Also if you aren’t already a member of our 100 Brother Challenge, please go to our website to learn more and consider joining. Even a small monthly donation can go a long way in towards events like this, expanding our scholarships, and allowing us to better serve our undergraduate chapter.

Below are a few photos of other events that have taken place over the last few months.

Renaissance Brother Introduction - Timothy McAuley

Dear Brothers,

It is with the utmost pleasure I introduce our newest Renaissance Brother, Dr. Timothy McAuley. Brother McAuley is a Naval veteran who received his PhD. in Environmental Science and Engineering and his MS in Chemistry from Clarkson University along with a BS in Biochemistry from The College of Saint Rose.

He is married to Jennifer Bashant-McAuley, also a Clarkson graduate, and they have two wonderful daughters Corinne, 5, and Carys, 3, with a 3rd child on the way. They reside in Queensbury, NY near Lake George.

I personally take great pride in sharing this announcement with the NYX Alumni community as Tim has been my friend and mentor since 2001 with our Brotherly bond growing stronger over time. Back in 2009 I was an eager observer to his transition from employee to entrepreneur when he decided to lead instead of follow and founded CHANGE, LLC. Sigma Phi Epsilon’s principles, virtue and diligence, are a part of his daily life and have allowed him to succeed when others have failed.

He has numerous career achievements noted by the short summary below, while additional information can be found on his LinkedIn page1:

  • Founder, Board Chairman and Chief Executive Manager of CHANGE

  • Multi-award winning environmental expert and a world renowned environmental leader and expert in air quality, human health exposure and risk assessment.

  • Directed, managed, and consulted on numerous domestic and global environmental consulting and research studies in the areas of air quality and human health exposure and risk assessments.

  • As a result of his work and contributions to the environmental field, Dr. McAuley has been invited to give several key note speeches and has become a global resource for environmental forward thinking and a leader in his field.

  • Reappointed to a second term on the prestigious Transportation Research Board, Committee on Transportation and Air Quality at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington.

  • Elected to the American Chemical Society Committee on Environmental Initiatives, and the highly visible United States Environmental Protection Agency Scientific Advisory Board.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/timothy-r-mcauley-ms-phd-veteran-891a8520

Brother McAuley is committed to giving of himself and time and has met with part of the Chapter and planning speaking engagements to the Chapter in the areas of business and leadership. I look forward to positive influence Brother McAuley brings to the Chapter as they continue to attract Alumni speakers.

Again, I offer a warm welcome to Brother Timothy McAuley.

VDBL,

Brother Matthew Fox

Renaissance Brothers… What Are They?

After reading about Brother McAuley, you may be asking yourself “what is, or what does it take to be a Renaissance Brother?”. It is often misinterpreted to have a requirement of being at the university on-site such as Brothers Jason Keleher and Mark ‘Ruddy’ Elliott were for example. However a Renaissance Brother is a man who aligns to, and embodies, SigEp’s cardinal principles regardless of their location. They also must not have been in a social Fraternity previously and either have or are willing to give of themselves to the Chapter. While they are most often graduates from the same college/university as the Chapter in which they are welcomed, it is not a requirement.

With that in mind if you have a close friend, father, brother whom you feel embodies the values and they have or are willing to get involved for the betterment of the Chapter, then they are a potential Renaissance Brother.

Nominations for Renaissance Brothers can be directed to the AVC Board and then to the Chapter. The Chapter is responsible for reviewing, interviewing and voting to offer membership to the candidate. If a bid is offered, and you are interested in being a part of the Renaissance Brother ROP, you are welcomed to join, and in my case, serve as Guide, for your candidate through the Ritual which can be an extremely special and rewarding experience.

I hope this article brings additional candidates to mind as the Chapter is always looking for additional mentors and volunteers.

Happy to answer any questions,

Brother Fox

2016 NYX Undergraduate Update

Brothers,

The undergraduate chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon ended last semester strong with recognition from the Order of Omega (an undergraduate society of high performing Greek leaders), helping us to transition into the Fall with a great mind set. The Chapter received the following awards:

  • Excellence in Campus Wide Initiative,
  • Excellence in Member Development,
  • Excellence in Risk Management,
  • Outstanding Chapter Adviser (Kate),
  • Outstanding Contribution to the Community (James Toolen).

Along with this recognition we scored the highest on the Core Report, which is how Clarkson ranks how well each Greek organization does with community service and campus involvement. Scoring the highest on this report allowed us to have a table at the First Saturday festival hosted by Clarkson and Potsdam clubs downtown on Main Street. This event was designed to introduce underclassmen to the organizations they could potentially become involved with. For this event we had commemorative cups designed, and handed them out along with information about the Balanced Man Scholarship. The next day we held our annual Dorm Wars games and they were a huge success, yielding an impressive turnout of 150 Freshman. The success of Dorm Wars lead to recruiting around a dozen Freshman, which we have been inviting to our Sound Mind and Sound Body events. We also designed posters and distributed them around campus to inform the Clarkson community of the Balanced Man Scholarship and Rush Week.

This semester we gained four new brothers, three Juniors and one Sophomore. Our Chapter now has 38 undergraduate brothers, 4 of which are on co-op and 13 are Seniors. The new members are all  going through our newly revamped Sigma Program, which is more structured to help them finish their Sigma trackers on time. Another improvement this semester has been the overall cleanliness of the house. We have implemented a new chore system, which makes each brother accountable for a designated area of the house that they are responsible for keeping clean. This new system has helped us improve respect for each other and for the house. Our Chapter is also renewing our Title IX training with the university and working with the Red Cross to get CPR certification for all of our undergraduate brothers. A few other goals our Chapter has are:

  • Positively impacting as many lives in the local community as possible.
  • Providing brothers with academic resources to ensure success.
  • Ensuring that SigEp gives our brothers the experience of a lifetime.

2016 Ruck Recap Letter

Brothers,

I am so thankful to all of you for making it possible for me to attend Ruck this year. I learned more and saw myself develop more in 5 days, than I have in my past 3 years of college. This truly was life changing and an experience I will look back fondly on for a very long time. I am confident that the lessons I learned about leadership will transcend across my entire life, not just SigEp. Specifically I took away the importance of enabling others and encouraging the heart, as paramount to effective leadership. This is something that I have not been doing enough as a leader, and I now see how incorporating this will be essential.

To go into what Ruck is exactly, it is 5 days in a small group of 20 other undergrads led by 2 facilitators. Each group's facilitators were very successful SigEps who had a passion for winning and also the science of leadership. We divulged into the 5 facets of leadership in great detail (Model the way, Inspire a shared vision, Challenge the process, Encourage the heart, and Enable others). These principles were taken from the book "The Leadership Challenge" by Barry Posner. This book tackles leadership in a research backed way, that makes some really astounding points. I would highly recommend checking it out this winter.

During learning about leadership our group became extremely close and open with each other. Meeting and connecting with leaders from other chapters was something that I had done before at other SigEp events, however this was on a whole new level. The connections we made will be lifelong. We constantly challenged ourselves to see things differently and every single one of us left Ruck feeling extremely empowered and motivated to approach leadership differently. Please see the attached for my notes from the event.

I think that sending someone to Ruck should be a chapter goal that we push very hard for every year. The lessons taught about life are something that I may not have learned until I was deep into my professional career. I have attached some of my notes from the program. If any of you would like to know more about what I learned, feel free to reach out to me.

Thank you all very much.

Letter from the AVC President

10.15.2016

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of Sigma Phi Epsilon,

I want to express my sincere appreciation in being re-elected as the AVC President for New York Chi.  Last year as President, I wanted to increase the communication to alumni and the interaction among alumni to increase.  We made strides with our website, email blasts, electronic and paper newsletters and events held outside of Clarkson University.  While we did increase our communication and interaction, there is still much more that can be accomplished to help propel this organization.  My goal will be to improve our existing method of on-boarding new alumni into our organization and to increase the number of alumni we are currently communicating with.

These goals will be in conjunction with many of the activities set in motion by the AVC Executive Board over the last couple years and further enhance and promote our organization from the Undergrads to the Founders.I welcome all feedback and encourage everyone to contact me or the AVC executive board via sigep.nyx.avc@gmail.com.

At this time, I would like to show my appreciation for the hard work that Ryan Stephens did in the position of AVC Secretary.  He graciously stepped down from the position but stressed he will continually aid the AVC board and more specifically the newly elected Secretary, Brandon Lennox.  I wish Brandon all the best in the new position and look forward to working with him to further improve the AVC organization.

As of October 2016, the AVC executive board is as follows:

  • President:  Ken Rushing
  • Secretary:  Brandon Lennox
  • Treasurer:  Matt Fox
  • VP Relations:  David Ress
  • Balanced Man Steward:  Ryan Stratton
  • Undergraduate President:  Lucas Carter
  • Chapter Counselor:  Kate Mikel

Please feel free to reach out to anyone on the AVC Executive Board or to the Universal AVC email, sigep.nyx.avc@gmail.com.

Undergraduate Invitation to Alumni

Lucas Carter, SigEp NYX Undergraduate President

With the weather finally starting to warm up (reach above 0 in Potsdam), the excitement of Alumni Weekend is beginning to loom in the air. A time when alumni can reconnect with brothers they have fallen out of touch with, and undergrads finally get to meet the alumni they have heard so much about. This has always been one of the undergrads’ favorite weekends, and I’m sure the alumni feel the same.

This year the weekend will consist of an Alumni career panel, the undergrads beating the alumni in softball, a happy hour in Club 99, and a dinner reception in the Cheel Barben rooms. Please see the SigEp NYX blog for full details.

To provide a bit of the current context of NYX, our chapter has continued to succeed and maintain its positive reputation with the University and the community. We currently have 41 active members, and in the fall of 2015 we boasted an average 3.09 GPA. This semester we have volunteered and logged over 150 man hours at the Maplewood assisted living facility in Canton. We also have donated to Shepard’s for Lost Sheep, Potsdam Humane Society, and St. Lawrence Hospice this past year. We have constantly been looking for opportunities to give back to our community whether that be here in the North Country or within the greater SigEp Alumni community.

I would like to invite you to attend Alumni Weekend (April 8th-10th) to reconnect with brothers and see how well our chapter is carrying forward the vision of our founders!

2016 Carlson's Recap

Lucas Carter, SigEp NYX Undergraduate President

Over a weekend in early February, six of the Sigma Phi Epsilon undergraduate Executive Board members trekked down to Stamford, Connecticut for the Carlson Leadership Academy. We made the trip with chapter advisor Kate Mikel, and as you can imagine there was not a dull moment. Each undergrad attended a tract specific to their role on the executive board.

Throughout the 2 days we were able to network with other SigEps and gain fresh perspective on our fraternity and its aspirations. We especially connected with the SEC of University of Connecticut and were able to pick their brains about further developing our Balanced Man Scholarship.

At the conclusion of the event, we met with Kate and AVC board members Matt Fox & Ken Rushing to discuss applying what we had learned. Each undergrad came up with a few SMART goals and action items which would help sustain and expand the excellence of our chapter. We came away with ideas about better utilizing our Balanced Man program, looking into becoming recognized as a residential learning community, and better managing our campus brand. Between learning more about SigEp best practices and late night McDonald's runs, it is safe to say the weekend was a success.
